Artist, Hiker, Collector
“To create one’s own world takes courage.” Georgia O’Keeffe
Sharon Rose Hjartarson, artist, hiker and collector, graduated with an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Calgary in 2001. Her main artistic interests include creating installations, sculptures and site-specific works that draw the viewer into a conversation about issues confronting us on an individual, local and global level. Her artistic inspiration comes from her hiking and gathering expeditions.
An environmental echo surfaces in Sharon’s work. The sensory stimuli ingested while hiking and gathering are woven into the finished pieces. The viewer catches glimpses here and there of the individual and collective social issues. The themes of journey and transition are constant. The natural cycle of birth, growth and death reoccur.
? The found objects and natural materials she uses have a story. Notably, historians collect and examine man-made and natural specimens to learn about past cultures and how they impact our world. The materials gathered on Sharon’s hiking expeditions and used in her work similarly engage the viewer about issues that challenge our present thinking.
?Sharon’s new body of work will be showing September 1 to November 4 at the Art Gallery of Stony Plain, Stony Plain Multicultural Centre, Stony Plain, Alberta. Her previous work has been shown provincially. Sharon’s work is in several private collections.
